Makerere University Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics in collaboration with University of Liverpool received funding from the UK Medical Research Council to build research capacity in the discipline of Drug Safety Science in Uganda. This project seeks to develop a robust research program to strengthen local capacity to identify and address the challenges of drug utilization and safety and promote translation of research findings into policy and practice. Research modalities span the biomedical, clinical, epidemiological, social sciences, implementation science and policy-related disciplines. In particular, the project will prioritize the fields of pharmacovigilance, pharmacoepidemiology, clinical pharmacology, pharmacogenomics and clinical disciplines within the realm of medicine use and safety. Position Summary
The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for collection, processing, storage, and transportation of biological samples from study participants. The incumbent will ensure high-quality laboratory practices in line with Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP), national, and institutional standards.
Key Responsibilities
* Perform venipuncture and collect blood samples from study participants.
* Process samples according to study standard operating procedures (SOPs).
* Maintain sample integrity by ensuring timely storage and/or transportation to the laboratories.
* Conduct basic laboratory tests as required by the study protocol.
* Ensure proper calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
* Maintain accurate and up-to-date laboratory records, logs, and sample tracking systems.
* Observe biosafety standards and ensure safe disposal of hazardous waste.
* Participate in internal and external quality assurance programs.
* Support training and supervision of research assistants on safe sample collection and handling.
* Liaise with study clinicians, research assistants, and facility staff to ensure smooth operations.
* Contribute to data entry, verification, and reporting of laboratory results.
* Perform any other laboratory-related duties assigned by the Principal Investigator.
Qualifications and Requirements
* Diploma in Biomedical Laboratory Technology or Biomedical Laboratory Science.
* Valid practicing license from the Allied Health Professionals Council (AHPC).
* At least 2 years’ experience working in a clinical or research laboratory setting.
* Proficiency in phlebotomy, sample processing, and handling biological specimens.
* Familiarity with Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) is an advantage.
* Experience in HIV-related laboratory procedures is desirable.
* Strong organizational, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
* Good communication and teamwork skills.
* Proficiency in using electronic data capture tools is desirable.
