Welcome to the April–June 2026 edition of the College of Health Sciences Newsletter, which highlights key achievements, innovations, and milestones that continue to advance our mission of improving health through excellence in education, research, and service.
This quarter has been particularly significant for the College. We proudly graduated the first cohort of fellows from the Perinatal and Neonatal Medicine Fellowship Programme, a landmark achievement that strengthens Uganda’s capacity to provide specialized care for newborns and contributes to national efforts to reduce neonatal mortality. The newsletter also showcases the College’s growing contribution to research and innovation. From the groundbreaking APT-Sepsis study, which has demonstrated remarkable success in reducing maternal deaths, to the pioneering use of artificial intelligence by researchers at the Infectious Diseases Institute to address cancer and drug resistance, our scholars
continue to generate solutions to some of the most pressing health challenges facing our communities.
Equally important is our commitment to nurturing future leaders in health sciences. The Vice Chancellor’s engagement with College staff underscored the importance of strengthening graduate training, research systems, and mentorship to produce the next generation of researchers, innovators, and healthcare professionals.
This edition also reflects the human side of medical education through the Cadaver Commemoration Ceremony, where students honoured their “silent teachers.” The event served as a powerful reminder of the values of compassion, respect, and service that underpin the medical profession. These accomplishments are the result of the dedication of our staff, students, alumni, partners, and supporters. I extend my sincere gratitude to all who continue to contribute to the growth and success of the College.
As you read this newsletter, I invite you to celebrate these achievements and join us in our shared commitment to advancing health, knowledge, and innovation for the benefit of society.
