Death Announcement | Professor John Tuhe Kakitahi [16th February 1940 to 15th May 2024]

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Prof. John Tuhe Kakitahi, our former Director of the Institute of Public Health. He peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, 15th May 2024 at Mulago National Referral Hospital.

A Vigil will be held at their residence on 211 Nadduli Road, Bunga, on Thursday, 16th May 2024, commencing at 6:00 PM.

A Funeral Service will be held at All Saints Cathedral Nakasero on Friday, 17th May 2024, starting at 9:00 AM.

Subsequently, a service and burial will take place at their family home in Rwekureiju, Rubanda District, on Saturday, 18th May 2024, beginning at 10:00 AM.

MakSPH pays special tribute to a man who from his early career years, demonstrated exceptional intellect, clinical acumen, passion and complete dedication to combating hunger, malnutrition and human suffering. He joined Makerere University Service in 1973 and passionately taught human nutrition to undergraduate and postgraduate students, especially Diploma in Public Health students, during the Maternal Child Health and Nutrition teaching program. On July 1, 1977, Dr. Kakitahi became Senior Lecturer and later promoted to the rank of Associate Professor on August 1, 1984. He became Institute of Public Health Head for two years on September 18, 1989.  

Throughout his tenure at IPH, Dr. Kakitahi's contributions were manifold. He in addition to teaching, mentorship conducted field investigations and community outreaches to improve human nutrition and maternal-child health. Kakitahi's contribution and influence transcended borders, as he represented Uganda with distinction at various international forums.

He is fondly known for establishing and heading the Mwanamugimu nutrition center in Mulago hospital in the 1990s.
