On 16th September 2026, Makerere University, through its College of Health Sciences (MakCHS), signed a strategic five-year collaboration agreement with Amsterdam University Medical Center (Amsterdam UMC) and Amsterdam UMC Research BV. The partnership formalizes institutional cooperation between the two leading centres to pool their resources, expertise, and technologies in biomedical research and medical education.

Under the terms of the agreement, the institutions will establish a Joint PhD program allowing doctoral candidates to fulfill the academic requirements of both universities through a single research thesis and unified final examination. Upon completion, graduates will earn a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree recognized by both Makerere University and Amsterdam UMC.

In addition to doctoral training, the agreement creates structured pathways for the exchange of MSc students, PhD candidates, and resident physicians. Host institutions will provide dedicated local advisors and mentorship to incoming trainees. To further harness academic leadership, the agreement also enables honorary, non-remunerated joint faculty appointments across both institutions.

The collaboration will focus on joint research initiatives and scientific exchange. Key research areas identified include infectious diseases—specifically tuberculosis, malaria, HIV/AIDS, and sexually transmitted infections—alongside oncology, non-communicable diseases, neurology, and injury control. Principal investigators from both universities will jointly direct scientific research projects and seek shared funding.

The agreement is set for an initial duration of five years, with options for extension upon mutual written agreement.
