MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT OF NURSING

Welcome to the Department of Nursing at Makerere University. It is my great pleasure to extend a warm welcome to all our students, faculty, alumni, partners, and visitors. We are proud to be a leading institution dedicated to excellence in nursing education, research, and practice, shaping the future of healthcare in Uganda and beyond.

Our VISION is “To be a leading and transformational department for academic excellence and innovation in Nursing in Africa

MISSION: To improve the health of the people of Uganda through innovative and responsive teaching, research, and provision of services.

The Department of Nursing at Makerere University was established in 1993 to offer undergraduate studies in Nursing. This undergraduate program was the first baccalaureate nursing program in Uganda. The program incorporates and emphasizes general nursing, midwifery, community health, management, leadership, and research.

We are home to accredited Bachelor of Nursing Science and Master of Nursing in midwifery women’s Health degrees. We also offer continuous professional Development programs in Geriatric Nursing. We are in the process of launching graduate master’s
programs in Paediatric and Child Health Nursing, Emergency and Critical Care Nursing, and Oncology Nursing.

The Nursing programs at Makerere University offer a robust and comprehensive education, preparing students for successful careers in nursing and making significant contributions to healthcare in Uganda and beyond. We plan to transition into a School of Nursing with the following departments:
1. Maternal and Child Health
2. Adult Health Nursing
3. Community and Public Health
4. Research and Innovation
5. Paediatrics and Child Health


Research is a cornerstone of the Department of Nursing, serving as a critical component for both students and faculty. Our research endeavours address key challenges across Nursing, Health, Education, patient care, innovation, and Health care systems.

We collaborate with local and international partners to generate impactful knowledge that informs policy, improves practice, and enhances patient care. Our commitment to research is driven by the goal of advancing the field and making a meaningful difference in our society. In addition, our partnerships with local and international collaborators include aspects of education, practice, and service to the community. We offer a supportive learning environment enriched by faculty mentorship and hands-on clinical experience for both local and international students. With extensive experience in facilitating international placements for students from partner universities, we also proudly host students from these institutions, providing them with a valuable and immersive placement experience. We have global collaborations with the following universities.

Department of Pharmacy

History
The Department started in 1988 with one programme i.e. Bachelor of Pharmacy, and seven staff only. Student Admission was 10 per year. There was no research or collaboration. The duration then was 4 years.

Currently
There are three programmes:
1. Bachelor of Pharmacy (5 years, Enrollment 50 per year),
2. Master of Science in Pharmaceuticals and Health Supplies Management (2 years, Enrollment 10 per year), and
3. Master of Pharmacy in Pharmacognosy (2 years, Enrollment 25 per year).

Collaboration
1. IDI (Infectious Diseases Institute) Mak-CHS, on Antimicrobial Stewardship,
2. El Alto Foundation, on Hospital Pharmacy and Compounding, and Research, and
3. National Drug Authority (NDA), and
4. MSH, Medicines Supplies Management.
 

Research Areas
Includes, but not limited to:-
1. Medicines and Other Products Development,
2. Quality of Medicines,
3. Food Safety, and
4. Product Use.
