Olivia Kituuka

Dr. Olivia Kituuka is a lecturer and an upper gastrointestinal tract (GI) and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) surgeon working with the Department of Surgery at Makerere University College of Health Sciences in Mulago Hospital, Kampala, Uganda, for over 15 years. She recently completed and successfully defended her PhD in Bioethics at Makerere University, supported by the Makerere University International Bioethics Research and Training Program and the Bioethics Institute at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). The title of her PhD was ‘The Informed Consent Process for Emergency Surgery in Public and Private Hospital Surgical Emergency Units in the Urban Ugandan Setting.’ Her data collection involved a cross-sectional survey of patients and their next of kin, in-depth interviews of the next of kin, key informant interviews of emergency staff, and direct observation of emergency staff at the emergency units of one public and one private hospital in the capital city of Uganda, Kampala. She is a member of the Uganda Cancer Institute Research and Ethics Committee for the past 10 years. She has mentored and continues to mentor and supervise trainee surgeons and Master's in Bioethics students at the Bioethics Department at Makerere University College of Health Sciences.
