Erisa Sabakaki Mwaka

Erisa is a clinician, academician, and bioethicist. He is an Orthopaedic and Spine surgeon, and an Associate Professor of Human Anatomy. He is a core member of the Uganda National Immunization Technical Advisory Group. He is a member and past chairperson of the Makerere University School of Biomedical Sciences research ethics committee and a member of the Forum for REC Chairs at the Uganda National Council of Science and Technology. He is a mentor on the African Bioethics Training Consortium consisting of Johns Hopkins University, the University of Botswana, the University of Zambia, and Makerere University.

Erisa teaches and supervises graduate students of bioethics and participates in and conducts regular short course training in responsible conduct of research, research ethics, and clinical ethics. He actively participates in undergraduate and graduate training and student mentorship. He chaired the Human Heredity and Health (H3Africa) Ethics and Community Engagement Working group for four years. He is a core member of the “Beyond the Sequence: Ethical, Legal and Social Contexts in Genomics” at the Wellcome Trust, United Kingdom which aims to integrate genomic Science, and Ethical, Legal, and Societal contexts in genomic research.

He was a member of the African Ethics Working Group that provided ethics guidance to the Neuropsychiatric Genetics of African Populations-Psychosis (NeuroGAP) project that was implemented in four African countries. He is a faculty member to the US Fogarty International Centre (FIC) funded International Health Research Ethics Training (IHRET) Master of Bioethics training program at Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS). He is a co-investigator and coordinator of the PhD in Bioethics training program at MakCHS. He has research interests in research ethics; ethical, legal, and social implications of biobanking and genomic research; clinical ethics; digital health ethics; human anatomy; medical education; and bone health.
