Beatrice Achan

Dr. Achan is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Medical Microbiology, School of Biomedical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, Makerere University. Dr. Achan has published several papers on microbial characteristics, antimicrobial resistance, and fungal diseases. Dr. Achan has advanced formal training in Medical Microbiology with further specialisation in Medical Mycology (fungal). Upon completion of her Wellcome Trust Strategic Award twin MRes + PhD Medical Mycology training programs in UK Universities (University of Aberdeen, 2014 and Newcastle University, 2018), Dr. Achan has been motivated to improve fungal disease research in the priority areas of anti-fungal resistance, epidemiological data, and training. Dr. Achan combines her clinical knowledge and skills with biomedical science investigations to conduct translational research and train budding mycologists. Her primary research interests are focused on invasive fungal diseases where she has been involved in AIDS-defining cryptococcal meningitis and candidiasis research. As a Principal Investigator, Dr. Achan research has been funded by MESAU-MEPI (US NIH/Fogarty International Centre), NURTURE (US NIH/Fogarty International Centre) and EU EDCTP.
