Research Ethics Course

Background
The International Health Research Ethics Training (IHRET) program at Makerere University College of Health Sciences aims at producing trainees who will show leadership and significant contribution to improving standards and practice of research ethics to protect the safety and welfare of research participants. The program offers three levels of training which include Masters, Post graduate Diploma and short courses. The short courses include Research Ethics which run for 3-5 days. Research Ethics course is one of the short courses that describes the application of bioethics to research, the role and function of institutional review boards in promoting human subject protection.

Course objectives
By the end of the course trainees should be able to:
1. Describe the role, composition and functioning of IRBs
2. Organize and contribute effectively to the work of IRBs
3. Recognize and protect rights of human subjects
4. To become responsible investigators/Researchers

Course outline
Introduction to research ethics; Principles of research ethics and moral theories; Research ethics regulation and management; IRB processes; Research in vulnerable populations; Informed consent; Standard of care; Conflict of interest; Compensation; Stored specimens; Post-trial management and publication; Research non-compliance; Clinical trial management; Introduction to GCP and GCLP; Research collaboration at the local level and Ethics of genes & genomics research.

Target group
The Research Ethics course is targeted at IRB Members, Researchers, IRB Administrators /Research administrators, Research assistants, Study coordinators, Graduate students and Student supervisors. Certificates will only be awarded to participants with 80% attendance.

Course fee: 100,000/= + 2,500 for Bank charges or 40USD. The fee is to cater for participant’s meals and refreshments.
