Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
School of Dentistry, College of Health Sciences, Makerere University

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) at Makerere University’s School of Dentistry.

Our department plays a vital role in advancing specialist training in oral and maxillofacial surgery—a field that bridges medicine and dentistry and addresses complex conditions affecting the face, mouth, jaws, and neck. Since the launch of our specialist 4-year OMFS training programme in 2008, we have proudly contributed to the development of a cadre of highly skilled surgeons whose expertise is in increasing demand across Uganda and the region.

Though young as a standalone department—having gained departmental status in 2024—we are built on a foundation of academic excellence, clinical service, and commitment to surgical education. We continue to grow in both capacity and impact.

In addition to postgraduate training, the department also supports the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme. Our faculty deliver key foundational and clinical courses, including Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Biology, Oro-facial and Dental Anatomy, and Dental Radiology. These are essential components in shaping competent, well-rounded dental practitioners.

As Acting Chair, I am honoured to serve a department that not only nurtures the next generation of oral surgeons but also plays a central role in dental education and patient care. We are excited about the future and committed to contributing meaningfully to Uganda’s health sector and beyond.
