Dr. Simon P.S. Kibira is a Senior Lecturer in public health, at the Makerere University School of Public Health. He is social and population scientist holding a PhD in international health from the University of Bergen, Norway, a Master of Science in Population and Reproductive health [with distinction], and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences [1st class] from Makerere University, Uganda. He facilitates graduate and under graduate course units in sexual and reproductive health, research methodology (specializing in qualitative research), behavioral change communication, health promotion, social determinants of health, demography, among others, and supervises/mentors PhD and Masters students.
He is a certified project management professional (PMD Pro), with nearly two decades of experience in conducting, supervising, coordinating and managing research/project activities at different levels, and facilitating learning in both academic and non-academic settings. He has generated research evidence in scientific publications internationally, research reports and engages in research utilization aimed at improving population health. He has served as Investigator on several projects in various areas including: National surveys in family planning, primary health care performance, Schistosomiasis prevalence, and HIV; Vaccination coverage for Measles-Rubella, Yellow fever and Polio; The Uganda demographic and health surveys; Sexual and reproductive health including fertility and understanding infertility, male circumcision and sexual behaviour, among others. Dr. Kibira has excellent team, project management, surveys operations and research utilization skills.
He has also worked with multi-country, multi stakeholder research projects and teams, a demonstrated record of working in diverse environments. He is a recipient of the DHS program fellowship in population and health from ICF international, and is one of the internationally certified trainers for Atlas.ti - a qualitative data analysis software. Dr. Kibira serves as Secretary to the Makerere University School of Public Health Research and Ethics Committee (SPHREC), and chairs the ICT & Public relations committee of the School. He has examined externally at PhD level for University of KwaZulu Natal, SA. Outside research and academia, Dr. Kibira is an award-winning member of his village in Kampala for exceptional community service.
