Statement from the newly sworn-in MakCHSA President

MaKCHSA is an umbrella body for all students in Makerere University College of Health Sciences. After realizing the increasing diversity of challenges and opportunities at the display of the students, several mother associations sprang up. This sparked off the need for a uniting body that brings together all students at College of Health Sciences irrespective of their programs. It didn’t take much time and in 2013, the first MaKCHSA Executive was constituted headed by the President. Today every association sends two representatives to MaKCHSA including association presidents to bridge the gap between the students’ fraternity and our administrators in order to steer forward the college at large.

I am also delighted to inform you that for all these years, CHS has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high offices, but because we have lived as a family, faithful to the ideals of our fore-bearers and true to our professional principles. I encourage our students to focus not only on your studies, but also to carve out time for yourself. It is important for our physical and mental health to take breaks from intense academic focus.  Those breaks will make you more able to concentrate on your academic work, will refresh you and help your creativity, and will ensure that you learn some things at CHS that cannot be taught in books or online.

In reaffirming the greatness of our college we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted or for those that prefer leisure over work; rather, it has been for the risk-takers, the doers and the makers of things.

Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of medical knowledge and delivered it safely to future generations.

For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of our health systems calls for action, bold and swift. And we will act, not only to improve these systems, but to lay a new foundation for a better sustainable health service delivery in our country. Confident that you are ready to author your own story.

H.E BYAMUGISHA JOSEPH
COLLEGE PRESIDENT 2018/19.
