The Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS) Quality Assurance and Gender Committee (QAGC) has conducted site visits of various departments in the College to monitor their performance. Four sample departments were visited: Department of Anatomy, Department of Immunology and Molecular Biology, Department of Optometry and Department of Orthopedics on the 13th June to the 14th June 2022.
The site visits were conducted by a select team from QAGC with the following members Dr. Haruna Muwonge, Dr. Christine Nalwadda, Dr. Rajab Khalid, Dr. Jude T. Onyango. The team was accompanied by Ms. Irene Namatende (Quality Assurance Officer), Ms. Rachel Mirembe (Senior Administrator) and Ms. Zaam Ssali (Principal Communication Officer).
The visits are premised on the Makerere University and MakCHS Strategic Plans for 2020-2030. The two plans underline the importance of monitoring and evaluation as well as quality assurance as foundations to ensure maintenance of the positions of Makerere University and MakCHS as research; teaching and learning leaders in Uganda, region and globally.
The following checklist was used to assess performance in the departments visited: presence of Strategic Plan for the Unit; vision and goals; Facilities/Lab Equipment; Staff/student ratio; Level of specialty; collaboration and partnerships; Number of graduate students; Number of students (undergraduate and graduate); Grants attracted; achievements; challenges and budget.
The College Quality Assurance committees work closely with the University Directorate of Quality Assurance to promote confidence in the teaching, research and outreach services of the University. The committee terms of reference include: develop quality standards and promote quality within the College; establish and monitor quality standards and practices; review and evaluate quality assurance systems and procedures; and implement recommendations from the University Quality Assurance Committee of Council.
