Richard Odoi Adome, a Professor of Pharmacy is the immediate past and pioneer Dean of School of Health Sciences from 2008 to Nov 2010, a position he took up after serving as Head of Pharmacy Makerere University Medical School for over 15 years. He was founder Head of the program of Pharmacy, which began in 1988. Professor Odoi has devoted many years of his professional life to the advancement of pharmacy education, research and capacity development. He is currently an active member of the Education Task Force FIP. This strengthened his involvement in the change from a teacher centered lecture based medical-pharmacy curriculum to student centered education grounded in Problem Based Learning and Community Based Education and Service at Makerere University.

He was the Investigator in Uganda for the Community Drug Use Project, an international project of 4 developing countries: Philippines, Mali, Pakistan and Uganda from 1992 to 2000. He is the Ugandan pioneer of the International Network of Rational Use of Drugs (INRUD) where he continues to be an active researcher/investigator and have contributed the large volume of scientific publications in peer reviewed journals together with providing mentorship and development of many Ugandan junior and mid-level researchers.

He has in addition, held high level positions outside the University, such as being the Chairman of the Board of Directors in the National Medical Stores (1998-2002), Chairman (Technical), the National Bureau of Standards (UNBS). Until recently he was an active Member of Board of Directors of the National Drug Authority that he participated in its establishment in 1993. His other exposures include working on Pharmaco-economic issues: Evidence, Money and Drug Selection, and Drug Policy issues for Third World. He was an active participant in both first and Second conferences of the International Committee for Improved Use of Medicines (ICIUM) in Changmai, Thailand in 1997 and 2004 respectively. Dr Odoi has had academic fellowships in the UK and Japan has recently completed a Medical Education Fellowship program at the FAIMER Institute, Philadelphia, PA, USA (2006-2008). His current passion is to mentor young people to be better health workers and teachers and to continue to promote research studies in drug use for the betterment of community.
