The College Principal, Charles Ibingira

Dr. Charles Ibingira is the Principal, Makerere University College of Health Sciences. Before ascending to this office, he was the Dean School of Biomedical Sciences at the College of Health Sciences. He has served Makerere University for the last 20 years since 1996 and has grown through the academic as well as leadership ranks; from lecturer, to Head of Department and Associate Dean Research for the Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Ibingira is an active General Surgeon and an Assoc. Professor of Anatomy. He has worked as a Medical Officer in a clinical setting. His 4-year tenure as Principal comes soon after his term as Dean School of Biomedical Sciences came to an end in late 2014. He has great skills and long experience in curricular development. During his work with the College of Health Sciences and interaction with the health system, he observed the great need for skills in biomedical sciences and biomedical engineering. He therefore spearheaded the founding of programmes in Biomedical Engineering and Biomedical Sciences, in addition to other undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. He also worked hard to source and develop faculty for these programmes. Currently, these are some of the most sought-after programmes by students joining the College. Dr. Ibingira is a senior researcher in surgery, anatomy, and bioethics. He has chaired several university committees. He holds many leadership positions in society, including membership to several company boards, and directorship of several companies. He has been a member various university councils. He has mentored and supervised several graduate students and junior faculty and published several papers in international journals. He is a Rotarian too!
