Department of Human Anatomy

The Department of Anatomy at Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS) is located at  Mulago Hill, about 3km from the Kampala city center. Established in 1923, it is part of the School of Biomedical Sciences and serves as a core pre-clinical department, training medical and health science students at graduate and undergraduate levels.

The Department is dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement in the anatomical sciences. As one of the College's foundational departments, it provides comprehensive training in human anatomy for undergraduate and postgraduate students across medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, biomedical sciences, and other health professions.

The Department combines traditional anatomical education with modern teaching approaches, including cadaveric dissection, histology, embryology, medical imaging, and digital learning technologies, to equip students with a strong understanding of the structure and function of the human body. This knowledge forms the basis for safe clinical practice, medical research, and innovation.

Research within the Department focuses on advancing anatomical knowledge, medical education, developmental biology, neuroscience, regenerative medicine, and other areas that contribute to improving healthcare in Uganda and beyond. Through collaborations with local and international institutions, the Department continues to strengthen research capacity and promote evidence-based practice.

Committed to academic excellence and professional development, the Department of Anatomy plays a vital role in training competent health professionals, supporting interdisciplinary research, and contributing to the College's mission of improving health outcomes through education, research, and service.
