Organization

Students at the College are organized under the Makerere University Medical Students’ Association (MUMSA) which is the umbrella body for the undergraduate students’ body. With MUMSA, individual student programs also have their associations i.e MUEHSA for the students of Environmental Science; MUNSA for the Nursing students, MUDSA for the Dental students, MUPSA for the pharmacy students and MURSA for the Radiology students.

 Each of the associations is student led and purpose driven to promote and maintain the College’s repute.

Current MUMSA president and student representative to the College Board is Mr. Arnold Muwonge Kizito (MBChB V)

MUMSA is the bridge between the college Administration and the students’ body

Activities

MUMSA organizes numerous activities each year,

1.       Annual International Students’ Conference. This is held each year on pertinent Health issues affecting especially the sub-Saharan African countries. This year the topic is Reproductive Health. Log into www.iscorh.org for details. MUEHSA and MUPSA also organize student conferences in their respective fields.

2.       Annual College of Health Sciences Students’ Dinner; organized each year to send off the finalists, usher in new MUMSA executive members and to reward outstanding students and teachers. In addition, each of the programs usually organizes a dinner to send of their finalists.

3.       MUMSA Galloway Awards, these are three years old and are given to outstanding teachers and students,

4.       Social life; MUMSA organizes sports galas and tours. This is done to for people to get to know each other and for fun. All the cultural institutions are well represented at the college through their different associations e.g. Makerere Acholi Medical Students’ Association (MAMSA) for the Acholi and LAMSA for the Langi.

College students are really spiritual as evidenced by the various strong religious associations they include, the Christian fellowship mainly for the Anglicans and the Pentecostals, Makerere University Muslim Medical Students’ Association for the Muslim the Catholics and the Adventist students too have their association.

5.       Student projects, there are numerous student run projects at the college; e.g. MUMSA HOP which deals with promotion of Sexual and reproductive Health among university students using a peer to peer approach; Community empowerment, this is done by the pharmacy students’ and is a project purposely designed to cater for the needs of the poor around us.

Others include Students for Equity in Health Care (SEHC), women and men’s networks respectively. The gift goes on an initiative of the college Christian fellowship to raise funds for needy people this is done through a play, this year the play is entitled The Evil Behind My Door it will be staged at theatre La BONITA on the 30th October 2010.

MUMSA also publishes the Makerere Medical Journal MMJ

6.       Elections; election onto the MUMSA Executive is by majority vote, winner takes it all basis;

Happening; constitutional review to streamline student leadership within the college.

MUMSA was formed under the former faculty of Medicine. A process is underway to form a more representative college body.
